Indoor Outdoor Carpeting - A Buying Guide
If you are thinking of buying a carpet, you have to consider very carefully the aesthetic and the technical aspects. With a huge variety of styles and colors being released every year, selecting the right mix of indoor outdoor carpeting to match your needs can be a very daunting task indeed.
Walk into any carpet store and you’ll be astounded by the wide variety of carpets that are available for you to choose from. You’ll find textured Plush carpets, Berber carpets, Saxony carpets, commercial carpets like the Shaw commercial carpet or even discount carpeting. You can also find carpets that can be installed on walls, carpets that can be custom-made to your size requirement or carpet sold in the form of squares or tiles as well. If carpet cost is a concern, you may want to look for discount carpet tile as most shops will have some available from time to time.
Carpets come in many different textures, constructions, designs, and colors. You can mix and match virtually any design and pattern to come up with the combination that you like. Using the correct combination of colors and textures, carpets can be made to complement the look of both formal and casual surroundings and at the same time help to blend harmoniously with the overall room designs.
Two very important factors to look into when you go carpet hunting are the volume of traffic that the carpet has to cater for as well as the area where the carpet will be placed. The construction and the texture are also key considerations in your carpet selection. Do also bear in mind the various carpet cleaning prices as different types of material will require different cleaning techniques.
The most widely used fibers with carpet manufacturing are nylon, polyester, and olefin. Each has its own unique qualities that make them great with specific applications or uses. Nylon, although the most expensive type of fiber, is the softest. It is the strongest, and this makes it perfect for any room in your house, including those places that have high traffic.
Polyester fiber, which is less resilient than nylon, is more efficient in terms of cost. It is highly resistant to stains and is an excellent choice for places like dining rooms or bedrooms which do not have high traffic volume.
The fiber Olefin is dyed in solution. The outcome is a carpet that is highly resistant to stains and can be easily cleaned using a water and beach solution - without any color loss. Olefin is also resistant to fading, mold, and mildew and so a carpet which is made of olefin is great for indoor outdoor carpeting. But bear in mind that olefin is not very tough and only those with Berber construction should be considered.
Carpets or tropical area rugs are available in either Plush or Berber construction. The Plush carpets are made of loops that are shorn and this result in the strands standing up vertically, whereas the Berber carpets are made with a continuous level loop.
Carpets with Berber construction do not squash owing to their superior loops. They feel harder when you step on them and are not very comfortable to lie down on or sit on. Moreover, they can be easily ruined by household pets with sharp claws. Berber carpets are excellent for areas that have high traffic like entranceway, living-rooms, and walking passages. They aren’t good for bedrooms, because of their hard and tough texture.
Plush carpets are a lot softer to walk or lie on. At the same time, they provide better sound and thermal insulation. However, they squash easily once they’re trodden on.
Using nylon fiber with the combination of tight low pile construction can reduce the amount of pile and squashing. This is because of the tough nature of the nylon fiber and the additional support given by the tight construction.
Most carpets have warranties ranging from 5 - 30 years and they do not cover the carpets placed on stairs. In addition, many carpet warranties insist that you must install new carpet padding together with the carpets at the time of installation for the warranty to become binding.
